First pic with new lens
by admin on Jan.31, 2009, under Uncategorized
This isn’t terribly exciting, but it’s somewhat notable as it’s the first picture I took with the new lens I just picked up. I love how sharp the picture looks, despite the lack of a tripod and a later evening lighting situation. More pics to come once I can get out and leave my house and yard…

New lens!
by admin on Jan.27, 2009, under Uncategorized
Getting a new lens is always like Christmas morning. When a lens comes, it opens up the range of photos you can take. My new lens, which is the Canon EF-S 18-200mm 1:3.5-5.6 with Image Stabilization is probably going to be my most commonly used “walk around” lens. The range on this is awesome! Being able to go so wide is a bonus, but the zoom is something I haven’t had access to up until now. I’m hoping to get out this weekend to get some landscape shots in, but weather will dictate whether or not that ends up happening. For now, I’ll keep my fingers crossed and my batteries charged!
Here’s a stock photo of the lens:

I took my dog out in the morning to play with him for a bit before heading out to go fishing with my wife, and the moments before sunrise were giving me some nice images, so I ran back inside and grabbed my camera. I was going to do some post processing on these to give them their maximum punch, but the 100% unaltered colors were worth presenting as they were. It’s interesting to see how in the span of only a few minutes the images fade from vivid to rather bland. It’s just another example of why photographers must take advantage of every moment as quickly as possible, because often times they just don’t last.
A long day

There’s nothing particularly artistic about this shot, especially with how common this sight has become at our house. Tami is crashed out on the couch at the end of a long work day with her dog by her side. Being six and a half months pregnant and working full time is quite the drain…

It had been a little while since we had the time to fire up the arcades and pinball machine, but Tami and I found our way in there tonight for a quick play session. While Tami was racking up big scores, multiballs, and watching the T-Rex gobble up pinballs, I snapped a few pics of her. Here’s one that I thought looked particularly nice.

Watching

These three teenage girls were watching people skate around at the Gallivan Center in Salt Lake City. It seemed like they were interested in what was going on, but a little apprehensive to put on skates and join the group of people making the turns out on the crowded ice.

I took these with my wife while we were downtown walking around. I really wish I had my tripod, as the majority of the pictures I took that night turned out to be a blurry mess. There was something about this dad talking to his daughter that was a bit charming, however. This big ball of light was actually a bunch of used water bottles glued together into a giant sphere and a light had been placed smack dab in the middle of them. Pretty neat. The other shot is out in front of the X-Mission offices, a popular local ISP.

I snapped this back in November last year while in Vancouver, Canada for a Community Day event with EA Games. This was the view from my hotel room.

Here are the shots from January. I might do individual posts for pictures I particularly like, but here’s a collection of everything taken in the month. Some days have multiple images.
Note: This is a sticky post, so new posts will appear chronologically after this one. It will remain a sticky post until it’s replaced by the February slideshow. Don’t forget to check below for newer posts!
